Tips for Responsible Practices Around Substances this Holiday Season
DID YOU KNOW
that substance use, abuse, and experimentation increase around the Holidays?
DID YOU KNOW
there are ways to support each other and our kids from doing so?
Support- Support each other, know that people have different memories,
emotions, and traditions during the holidays.
Maintain Routine: Incorporate some routine and structure to help manage stress.
Communication- Foster open and non-judgmental communication with children around substance use and encourage them to ask questions. A supportive environment increases the likelihood that they will seek guidance when facing peer pressure or difficult choices. Provide guidance on making informed decisions, including calling for a safe ride home and establishing a buddy system.
Access to Substances– Ensure prescription medications, medical marijuana, even e-cigarettes are stored securely & out of reach. Consider a medical lock bag or locked cabinet. If there is alcohol present, be sure it is out of reach or in a location where an adult is always present to minimize temptation, especially for curious children. Talk with children ahead a time about what they are allowed to have and not have.
Set Expectations: Talk about events & what to expect, specifically if going to a new house or location. Set boundaries and remind children of rules your family follows.
Educate About Risks: Stay informed about the potential risks associated with alcohol and drugs, especially pills available online or through dealers or prescription drugs not prescribed to you. Educate about the dangers of substances containing fentanyl and the importance of having NARCAN on hand to reverse overdoses.
Safe Transportation: plan ahead and ensure access to safe transportation or a designated driver who is not using substances.
Harm Reduction Practices: Avoid isolation, never use substances alone, and keep NARCAN accessible.
In the spirit of a safe and informed celebration, let these practices guide your family and friends towards a holiday season filled with joy, understanding, and responsible choices.
